Are your skincare products wreaking havoc on your hormones?

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

We are exposed to a tsunami of toxins in everyday life.

Foods, body care , the air we breathe , EMF

The average woman uses on average 12 products per day that contain approx 160 chemicals

There are over 1300 ingredients that have been band from personal care products.

In America there are only 11!

Japan and Europe have the highest standard and GRAS ( generally regarded as safe ) Eco cert is also a body that recommends safe ingredients that have been well researched.

Why are products containing so many chemicals so popular?

Like fast food! Loaded with toxic and synthetic ingredients. Designed to have instant appeal.

Fast results? Long term effects ? Carcinogenic, hormone disrupters.

What happens when many chemicals are combined. Create off shoot chemicals with unknown effects!

Over 200 endocrine disrupters

Allergens

Penetrators are used to drive product deeper into your skin and therefore into the body. various nano particles encapsulated. Many are petroleum based.

These ingredients are Studied in minute amounts to give safety data but the long term accumulated effects are not studied. The combined chemical effects are not studied.

5 Red flag ingredients

What should I watch out for?

Fragrance: Parfum: unknown ingredients. Trade secret therefore don’t have to disclose.

Parabens: potentially toxic

Parabens are listed as:

  • methylparaben

  • propylparaben

  • butylparaben

  • thylparaben.

Phthalates are colorless, odorless, oily chemicals added to plastic to stop it becoming brittle.

They are also used as gelling agents (they help mix ingredients that would not usually mix) in some shampoos and in other grooming products to help them stick to your skin.

They've been linked to birth defects and hormone disruption and are being monitored by the FDA.

Phlalates are listed as:

  • diethylphthalate

  • monoethyl

Formaldehyde: used as a preservative. Known carcinogen. listed as formic aldehyde,

methanethiol.

BHT Butylated Hydroxytoluene is a synthetic preservative that disrupts hormones, induces allergic reactions, and disrupts testosterone levels.

Long-term exposure to high doses of BHT causes liver, thyroid, and kidney problems in mice.

You can find BHT in moisturizers, antiperspirants, and exfoliators.

BHT is listed as:

  • BHT

Triclosan: has been banned from hand soap, but not other body products , known Hormone disrupter

The cosmetic industry uses triclosan as a preservative to stop bacteria from growing on the product and spoiling it. It's a biocide (a product that controls harmful or unwanted organisms through chemical or biological means) in many other personal care products such as deodorants, soaps, and shower gels.

It strongly connects with the weakening of the immune system, uncontrolled cell growth, and developmental and reproductive toxicity.

You can find them in antibacterial soaps, deodorants, face washes, shower gels.

Triclosan is listed as:

  • hydroxy diphenyl ether

Whatever you do to improve your skin improves your health. Why ? It is the largest organ in the body and integral to the immune system. 1st line of defence.

What adds to skin health?

Hydration. Plenty of water

Healthy sleep.

Suncare. Zinc oxide is the most natural sunscreen

Managing Stress.

Food Vegetables mushrooms avocados walnuts

When you apply toxins to the skin their are no filters compared to internal consumption

It goes straight into your body and blood.

Feed your skin healthy

Can be easy

The skin is receptive and responds fast to positive changes

Ideal is to take inventory of all your personal care products and throw away the toxic ones

If you cant do that choose the products you use the most and start with them

Gradual switching out to healthy choices

It not always easy to research all the ingredients you see on your labels

USDA or ACO organic are what I use to buy my raw ingredients and Eco cert are the guidelines I use.

“Green washing” marketing that uses buzz words to sell you a “natural product” but is unregulated and may only have one organic ingredient is something to look out for.

Although I haven't had the means and I am too small to justify the cost of organic certification, I do appreciate the value and certainly use these certifications to buy raw ingredients.

I research all my ingredients and adhere to organic and Eco cert and Cosmos and personal standards.

I hope this has given you food for thought. And know I have put plenty of thought in already to safe natural ingredients so you can buy My Urth products with confidence that a lot of the hard work has already been done.

Congratulations on reading to the end!
